BALTIMORE — In a significant move to strengthen the U.S. medical healthcare ecosystem and address critical national shortages in mental healthcare access, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized a new rule aimed at expanding coverage and payment for behavioral health services under Medicare.
Effective January 1, the rule establishes separate Medicare payment for services rendered by clinical psychologists and licensed clinical social workers when furnished as part of a primary care team. This policy change is designed to integrate mental and physical healthcare more effectively, allowing beneficiaries to receive comprehensive treatment in a single, familiar setting.
Furthermore, the rule creates new Medicare benefit categories for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) and Mental Health Counselors (MHCs), enabling them to enroll as Medicare providers and bill for their services for the first time. This expansion will substantially increase the pool of eligible mental health professionals available to the millions of older adults and individuals with disabilities enrolled in Medicare.
Healthcare advocates and industry leaders have widely praised the decision, noting that it removes long-standing financial and administrative barriers that have historically limited access to essential behavioral healthcare. By placing mental health on par with physical health coverage, this CMS rule marks a pivotal step toward holistic, patient-centered care within the national healthcare framework.
Hospital systems and provider organizations are now preparing for the implementation of these changes, reviewing new billing codes and ensuring compliance with the updated CMS guidelines.
